Norcatur was founded in 1885. Norcatur was named from its location near the border between Norton and Decatur counties. The first post office in Norcatur was established in October, 1885.

The racial makeup of the city was 98.7% White and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.0% of the population. There were 74 households of which 12.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couplesliving together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.9% were non-families. 40.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.04 and the average family size was 2.73. The median age in the city was 51.3 years. 17.9% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 14.6% were from 25 to 44; 33.8% were from 45 to 64; and 26.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 56.3% male and 43.7% female.

The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.58. In the city, the population was spread out with 16.6% under the age of 18, 2.4% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 32.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 51 years. For every 100 females, there were 79.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males. The median income for a household in the city was $24,750, and the median income for a family was $29,792. Males had a median income of $23,125 versus $16,250 for females.
