The community is located along State Route 139 south of Tulelake and about south of the Oregon border. It is less than south of Tulelake on the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5-minute quadrangle, Newell, California. The 2010 United States Census reported that Newell had a population of 449. The population density was 186.1 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Newell was 199 White, 2 African American, 23 Native American, 1 Asian, 5 Pacific Islander, 193 from other races, and 26 from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 271 persons. The Census reported that 449 people lived in households, 0 lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 were institutionalized. There were 136 households, out of which 69 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 74 were opposite-sex married couples living together, 24 had a female householder with no husband present, 8 had a male householder with no wife present. There were 10 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 0 same-sex married couples or partnerships. 23 households were made up of individuals and 8 had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The site of the World War II U.S. Army facility named the Tule Lake War Relocation Center is near the north end of the community. The center was a prison camp for interned Japanese nationals, and U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry, during a portion of the war.
The Union Pacific Railroad Modoc Subdivision tracks run along the west side of town and parallel to SR139.
