New Town High School (Tasmania)


New Town High School, is a Tasmanian Government secondary school for boys. It is located in Hobart, Tasmania. It is the only public all-boys school in the state, the only other public single-sex school being Ogilvie High School for girls. Its 2006 enrolment was approximately 830 students covering years seven to ten. The school has many outstanding programs in the performing arts, music and art facilities as well as offering an academic program that has produced many successful alumni. along with these New Town High School offers many technical and extended learning subjects such as Design in Metal and Wood, technologies and robotics programs and a languages department where Japanese and French are taught. New Town high is renowned for its athletic program and has remained one of the best in Hobart to this day, New Town’s sports teams and classes have produced several world class athletes and national sportsmen.

Houses

New Town High has four houses; Dechaineux, Ellis, Hunter and Jarvis, which all compete against each other to win the Cosgrove Shield, the David Close Shield and the Making a Difference Shield. There are two home groups per house, per grade.

Cosgrove Shield

The Cosgrove is named after Sir Robert Cosgrove, who laid the foundation for the current facilities at Midwood Street. The shield is the most prestigious prize awarded to the houses. Each house is allotted points for each of the four sporting carnivals, with the house with the highest number of points winning the shield for that year.
