Museum Witt
The Museum Witt Munich is a department of the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology. It is located in Munich, Germany, and has the world's leading collection of moths.The museum was established in 1980 by Thomas J. Witt. His well-known family founded Witt Weiden, one of Germany's oldest mail-order houses.
Since 2000 the museum has been part of the Zoologische Staatssammlung München in Munich. The collection consists of about ten million specimens from all over the world. It is the largest collection of moths in the world. The Museum Witt has a collection of three to three and a half million butterflies, and the Bavarian State Collection of Zoology additional seven million butterflies. A crew of scientists work at the museum and it has an impressive library.
Thomas J. Witt was awarded with the Ritter-von-Spix-Medal in 2001. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Munich in 2013.
