Morris Sugden


Sir Theodore Morris Sugden FRS, was a British chemist who was master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge and winner of the Davy Medal. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1963 and was the Director of Research of Shell Thornton Research Centre near Chester and head of Thornton combustion research lab. He was president of the Royal Chemical Society in 1978-9.

Life

Sugden was born on 31 December 1919 in the village of Triangle, Calderdale, West Yorkshire, England. Hi is the only child of Frederick Morris Sugden, company secretary, and his wife, Florence Chadwick. He had his early education at Sowerby Bridge and District Secondary School and gained an open scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge.

Awards and honours

He was appointed CBE in 1975 and knighted in 1983.

Legacy

The Sugden Award for combustion research is named in his honour.
