Matthew Dennis Hunt


Matthew Dennis Hunt, was a constable of the New Zealand Police who was shot dead while performing a routine traffic stop in the Auckland suburb of Massey at the age of 28.

Early life

Hunt was raised alongside his sister Elanor by his mother Diane in the Hibiscus Coast where he attended Orewa College.

Service in the New Zealand Police

Hunt joined the New Zealand police in October 2017 and was part of Wing 312 at the Royal New Zealand Police College at Papakowhai, the central training institution for police recruits and police officers in New Zealand. He spent most of his time as a frontline officer at Orewa and Helensville stations before transferring to the Waitematā Road Policing Team based at the Harbour Bridge Police Station.

Funeral

Hunt's funeral was held on 9 July 2020, at which an estimated 1500 members of the New Zealand Police gathered at Eden Park, Auckland.
At his funeral there was a guard of honour, a haka performed by the New Zealand Police, a piper and a saluting police officer in an eagle helicopter.
