Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007


Malta was represented by Olivia Lewis in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "Vertigo". "Vertigo" has been described as an oriental flamenco pop song. The song was written by Gerard James Borg and composed by Philip Vella.
Olivia Lewis was born on 18 October 1978 and is most notable for her successful music career in Malta and her several attempts at representing the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest. Olivia first tried her luck at the Malta Song For Europe when she was only 14 years old. In 2004, 2005, and 2006, Olivia was the runner up with her songs "Take A Look", "Deja Vu", and "Spare a Moment".

Malta Song for Europe 2007 was the national final format developed by TVM to select the Maltese entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2007.

Competing entries

TVM announced that 228 entries were submitted. On 27 November 2006, TVM announced that 35 entries were selected by an eight-member international jury panel to advance to the second phase of the selection. On 9 December 2006, 14 songs were selected by a seven-member international jury panel to compete in the semi-final. An additional 2 semi-finalists came from the TVM show Opportunity 2.

Semi Final

The semi-final was held on 1 February 2007 at the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali, hosted by Stephanie Spiteri and J. Anvil. The top six entries qualified to compete in the final on 3 February 2007 based on a 50/50 combination of votes from a jury and televoting.

Final

The final was held on 3 February 2007 at the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali, hosted by Stephanie Spiteri and J. Anvil. The winner was chosen by televoting, which the viewers decided that Olivia Lewis would represent Malta at Eurovision with the song "Vertigo". Olivia won her victory by a landslide, gaining 23,330 more votes than the song that came in second place.

At Eurovision

Because Malta placed 24th at the 2006 contest, Olivia was forced to compete in the semi-final. She came 25th with 15 points, failing to qualify to the Grand Final.
