This list of islands by area includes all islands in the world greater than and several other islands over, sorted in descending order by area. For comparison, continents are also shown.

Continental mainlands

The continental landmasses listed below are not normally known as islands. However, the definition of continent is not a consistent term: it is possible to list Australia as an island, a continent, or both. For simplicity, Australia and the other continents have been listed as continental landmasses. The figures are approximations and are for the four major continental mainlands only. The man-made Suez and Panama Canals are disregarded.
