Kent Innovation High opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2011 with one hundred freshmen, four facilitators, and supporting administration. Based on the "New Tech model" which originated in Napa, California, Kent Innovation uses project based learning to encourage inquiry and inspire creativity. In 2012–2013, Kent Innovation added approximately another 100 freshmen and 4 facilitators. This pattern will continue through 2014–2015 when the school reaches the maximum of around 400 students, 9–12. Students describe the environment as a "family" and that there is very little bullying. Kent ISD and their Superintendents have opened an exciting New Tech High School, Kent Innovation High, that is very different from traditionalhigh schools. With a focus on project-based learning and collaboration with both students and teachers, Kent Innovation High will demonstrate some of the best thinking in the country about teaching and learning. Success for all students is a driving goal of this "lab" school, which will serve as a learning laboratory for teachers and administrators who want to innovate back in their own schools. The high school's mission is to cultivate a learning environment that will prepare students to enter the professional environments that follow high school. Whether a student is thinking about pursuing higher education or entering the workforce, the school is looking to further assist students beyond the standardized module of education. With the incorporation of Project Based Learning, students learn and grasp communication, collaboration, authenticity, critique & revision, and reflection. The start of project-based learning is to be able to ask a question and allow students to ask for clarification and get a better grasp of the assignment and task. From there, facilitators in the classroom will try to have as much exposure or connection with real-world scenarios and involvement. This gives access for students to bond with their community- whether that consists with something local, or broader. The school helps to initiate professional work environment atmospheres and mediums, such as group work, presentations, and critical feedback sessions. Kent Innovation also gives experience to students with tangible job offers, internships, and resume building activities. From the glass walls and integrated presence of technology to the ongoing teamwork of students and just-in-time facilitated learning, the physical and cultural environment will be designed to:

Courses
GLOBAL STUDIES Global Studies is an integrated English and Social Studies class focused on world history, literature, culture, religion, and geography from 300 AD to present. ALGEBRA I Algebra I is a stand-alone course that meets the Common Core Standards for Algebra I. ALGEBRA II Algebra II is an integrated course with Physics. Both classes help teach the Common Core Standards for both Algebra II and Physics while integrating algebraic equations with physics related content. BIOLOGY Biology is a stand-alone-course in which students are expected to demonstrate competency of the following topics: Scientific Method, Genetics, Mitosis and Meiosis, Evolution. In addition, students cover the Common Core Science Literacy Standards. GEOMETRY Geometry is a stand-alone course that meets the Common Core Standards for Geometry. WORLD HISTORY World History is a stand-alone Social Studies class focused on world history, culture and geography from 300 AD to present. AMERICAN STUDIES American Studies is a course that is a combination between English 10 and U.S. History. This course focuses on how the past repeats into the future and how current events are related to the past.
