Kōji Yamazaki


Kōji Yamazaki is a Japanese general and who serves as 6th and the incumbent Chief of Staff, Joint Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces. Before assuming the post, he was the former Chief of the Ground Staff of the JGSDF from August 2017 to March 2019.

Career

A Graduate of the National Defense Academy of Japan. He started his career in the military in 1983 as a Military Engineer, and later holds various key positions in the engineer field, such as Researcher, Ground Research & Development Command, and Director, Logistics Management Division, Logistics Department, Ground Staff Office in 2006. He also served as the Chief, 1st Personnel Section, Assignment Division, Personnel Department, Ground Staff Office in 2003, the Commanding General of the 4th Engineer Brigade in 2008,
He also studied at the National War College in 2005 and also held vital positions in the JSDF, such as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Western Army in 2010, Became Director General, Personnel Department, Ground Staff Office on 2012. Became commander of the 9th Division on August 2014, became Vice Chief of Staff, Joint Staff in 2015, became commander of the Northern Army in 2016. and became the Chief of the Ground Staff of the JGSDF on 2017, before being appointed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as the Chief of Staff, Joint Staff in April 2019.
