Jonathan Gilbert (diplomat)


Jonathan James Gilbert is an Australian diplomat and senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He has been Australia’s Ambassador to Kuwait since 2017.

Early life and education

He was born in Sydney and attended Newington College from Year 3 in 1986 until completing his HSC in 1995. Gilbert holds a Master of International Studies and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney.

Career

Before Gilbert's appointment as Ambassador to Kuwait He was Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Embassy, Baghdad. In Canberra, he has served as Team Leader, Staffing Operations Section; Assistant Director, India Political Section; and Assistant Director, Strategic and Defence Policy Section. He previously served overseas as First Secretary at the Australian Embassy, Manila.
