John Houlton Marshall


John Houlton Marshall was a Nova Scotian who was a naval officer at the Battle of Trafalgar during the Napoleonic Wars. He was the son of Elias Marshall, master shipwright, of H.M. Careening Yard, Halifax.

Career

Captain John Houlton Marshall entered the Royal Navy in 1778. J H Marshall was a lieutenant serving on board, which he joined on 13 July 1804 and was at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805. His share of the prize money was 65 pound 11s 5d plus a Parliamentary Award of 161 pounds.

John Houlton Marshall was also first lieutenant on in 1810 and was promoted to commander at a ceremony held on 21 October 1810 to commemorate the Battle of Trafalgar.
He also survived the sinking on 19 May 1814 of on reef rocks in Annatto Bay, Jamaica.
