John Hodgkinson (footballer, born 1883)


John Chapman Hodgkinson was an English professional football forward who played in the Football League for Stockport County and Grimsby Town.

Personal life

Hodgkinson served in the British Army as a territorial. He later re-enlisted as a private in the East Lancashire Regiment during the First World War. Hodgkinson served at Gallipoli and on 5 June 1915, he was killed in action during an Ottoman counterattack at the Third Battle of Krithia. He was originally reported as missing in action, but his status was changed to presumed dead soon after. Hodgkinson's body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
