Jody Lee Lipes


Director of Photography Jody Lee Lipes is an NYU Film School graduate, whose first feature length film, Antonio Campos' Afterschool, premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes film festival in 2008. Jody gained prominence by lensing the first feature film to be shot and released on a digital DSLR, Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture, which went on to win Best Feature at SXSW 2010, and earn an Independent Spirit Award nomination for cinematography. That same year another feature film DP'd by Lipes, Two Gates of Sleep, premiered at the Cannes film festival. Jody went on to shoot Martha Marcy May Marlene, winner of the Best Director prize at Sundance 2011, and soon after became a Fellow at the Sundance Writing and Directing Labs. After lensing and directing episodes of season one of HBO's Girls, Golden Globe Winner for best comedy series, Jody shot Trainwreck for director Judd Apatow, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture. Lipes' Ballet 422, a feature length verite documentary about New York City Ballet, was theatrically released by Magnolia Pictures in 2014, after playing the TriBeCa Film Festival. Manchester by the Sea followed, which went on to be nominated for 6 Oscars, and win two. After lensing the pilot of The Sinner, and directing several episodes, Lipes took several years to focus on commercials before returning to long form on A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood with Marielle Heller directing, which earned an Oscar-nomination for Tom Hanks. Jody Lee Lipes is an American cinematographer and filmmaker.
A native of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Lipes attended New York University, where he studied film. He worked extensively on short films before serving as cinematographer on Tiny Furniture, directed by Lena Dunham. They would collaborate again when Lipes worked as cinematographer and director for several episodes of her HBO series Girls. Lipes would later work as cinematographer for Girls producer Judd Apatow's comedy Trainwreck, starring Amy Schumer. Lipes worked as cinematographer for Kenneth Lonergan's drama Manchester by the Sea, which he shot digitally.
As a director, he helmed a documentary on the NY Export Opus Jazz ballet, which had a screening at the annual South by Southwest festival, and the documentary Ballet 422, which screened at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.
