The Local Government came into being on 13 December 1996 having been carved out of Ijebu - Ode Local Government. On its creation, the Local Government was named Ilugun - Alaro, but was later changed to Ijebu North East Local Government, with its headquarters at Atan, as a result of addition of some towns which were not originally part of it, making the name embracing. Before the Local Government come into existence, various attempts had been made to bring people closer to the helm of affairs, one of such attempts was the creation of Ilugun Alaro District Council in 1955, which was later abolished in 1966. There was also the creation of Yemoji Local Government during the regime of Chief Bisi Onabanjo. Then, the Local Government and some areas now in the present Ijebu - Ode Local Government, formed Yemoji Local Government. This was, however, dissolved and merged with Ijebu Ode Local Government as a result of the military take-over of December, 1983. In 1996 December, the whole of the defunct Ilugun Alaro district council and part of defunct Yemoji Local Government emerged as the present Ijebu North - East Local Government, thus bringing administration closer to the people once more.
Boundaries
The area which is now known as Ijebu North-East Local Government is surrounded by Ijebu East Local Government in east, Ijebu North Local Government in north, Ijebu-Ode Local Government in south and Odogbolu Local Government in west. Its headquarters, Atan, is some 20 km from Ijebu-Ode and about 100 km from an Abeokuta, capital of Ogun State.
People
The people of this area belongs to the Yoruba ethic group. They speak the Yoruba language with Ijebu as main dialect. There are also people from other parts of Nigeria living among the natives, which makes communication in English language prominent. Christianity and Islam have the most adherents in this Local Government area. There are also traditional religious worshipers.
Culture
Traditional Festivals
Prominent among the traditional festivals are Egungun Idemunu festival at illese, Agemo, Epa, Jigbo, Raluwen, Lumafon, amongst others. One of the sixteen Agemos in Ijebu-land is resident in this Local Government.

Many of the communities are under the leadership of Baales and Olorituns. However, the Local Government has 8 beaded crown traditional rulers. They are: Oba A.O. Tourism
The popular Bilikisu Sungbo Shrine is located at Oke-Eri. The mysterious flat rock at Omu located within a thick forest with a brook flowing pass it. There is also a mysterious rock water reservoir about 150 meter deep at Ekurugbudu, amongst others. Osun Loore at Imewuro is the confluence of the Apoje River, and Akunrundun River.
