ITU-T Study Group 17


The ITU-T Study Group 17 is a statutory group of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector concerned with "Security", such as cybersecurity; security management; security architectures and frameworks; countering spam; identity management; the protection of personally identifiable information; and the security of applications and services for the Internet of Things. Recommendation X.509 was developed by SG17 and is still maintained by it, as is ASN.1, upon which X.509 builds. It is currently chaired by Heung Youl Youm of Korea.
Administratively, SG17 is a statutory meeting of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly, which creates the ITU-T Study Groups and appoints their management teams. The secretariat is provided by the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau. SG17 is the parent body of the ITU Focus Group on Quantum Information Technologies for Networks.
