Huw Thomas (physician)


Huw Jeremy Wyndham Thomas, is a British medical doctor and academic, specialising in gastroenterology. Since 1994, he has been a Consultant Physician at St Mary's Hospital, London and Director of the Family Cancer Clinic at St Mark's Hospital, London. In 2007, he was appointed Professor of Gastrointestinal Genetics at Imperial College, London. In July 2014, he was appointed Head of the Medical Household, the medical section of the Royal Household of the British monarch, and Physician to the Queen.

Early life and education

Thomas was born on 25 February 1958 in London, England. He was educated at Harrow School, an all-boys public school in London. He studied pre-clinical medicine at Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979: as per tradition, his BA was promoted to a Master of Arts degree. He then undertook further studies in medicine at the London Hospital Medical College, completing his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degrees in 1982. He later undertook postgraduate research in cancer research at University College, London, completing his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1991.
