Howth Harbour Lighthouse

The Harbour lighthouse in Howth is an historic aid to navigation situated on the East pier of the harbour. In 1982 it was decommissioned and replaced by a modern pole light on an adjacent extension of the pier

History

The lighthouse tower was completed in early 1818 and the adjacent lighthouse keeper's house in 1821, initially this was single storey, but an additional storey was added in 1856. The architect was George Halpin. The piers were built with granite which came from Dalkey Quarry, which also provided granite for the rival harbour at Dún Laoghaire.
