Hilary Charlesworth


Hilary Christiane Mary Charlesworth is a feminist international law scholar. Since 2016 she has been a Melbourne Laureate Professor at Melbourne Law School and Distinguished Professor and Director of the Centre for International Governance and Justice at the Australian National University. Her Australian Research Council Federation Fellowship was used to establish the Centre within the Regulatory Institutions Network in 2005.

Education and career

Charlesworth holds degrees from Melbourne and Harvard Law Schools, and is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria. She has served as editorial member of many legal publications, including the American Journal of International Law, Melbourne University Law Review and Cambridge Studies on International and Comparative Law.
In addition to her academic appointments, she works for a number of NGOs, including as a Patron of the ACT Women's Legal Service and advisory board member of the Institute for Migrant Rights. In 2011, she was appointed an ad hoc judge of the International Court of Justice in the Whaling in the Antarctic Case .
