Haydons Road railway station

Haydons Road railway station is in the north-east of the London Borough of Merton in South London. It is the nearest station to the New Plough Lane stadium, which is under construction as the new ground for AFC Wimbledon.

History

It was opened, originally as Haydens Lane, by the Tooting, Merton and Wimbledon Railway on 1 October 1868. The ticket office is on the up side of the station; the original station buildings were redeveloped by British Rail during 1991 and 1992 when land adjacent to the up platform was redeveloped for housing. Until the advent of Thameslink it was served by the London Bridge loop trains via Wimbledon.

Services

The typical service pattern operated by Thameslink is 2 trains per hour to St Albans City via London Blackfriars and 2 trains per hour to Sutton via Wimbledon. Services to Sutton then continue towards Mitcham Junction. Some late evening services to St Albans City are extended to Bedford. On Sundays, daytime services are extended to Luton.
On weekdays there are also peak time services operated by Southern. In the morning peak Southern services operate anticlockwise around the loop to Sutton via Wimbledon; and in the evening peak services run clockwise to London Bridge via Tooting.
Thameslink services are usually operated by Class 700 trains which have replaced the older Class 319 units. Southern services are mainly operated by 8 carriage Class 455 units.
