Gareth (given name)

Gareth is a Welsh or English-language masculine given name.
The modern name first appears in Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory, in which it belonged to Sir Gareth, a brother of Sir Gawain and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Malory either based the name on Gahariet ; or the Welsh word gwaredd, meaning "gentleness".
The name remains popular in Wales, with the modern form associated with the Welsh hero Geraint.
