Gandhipuram Central Bus Terminus


The Gandhipuram Central Town Bus Terminus, commonly known as the Gandhipuram Bus Terminus, is a bus terminus in Coimbatore that serves both city and town buses.

History

In Coimbatore, town buses started operating in 1921 to serve most parts of the city, as well as other towns and villages in the district. A central bus terminus was started in 1974 in Gandhipuram. Due to increases in population and vehicular traffic, additional bus terminals were created in Ukkadam, Singanallur, and Saibaba Colony. Today, northbound and eastbound buses use this bus terminal. It is located centrally in the city.

Gandhipuram Central Bus stand

Gandhipuram Central Bus Stand is the bus terminal for northeast-bound and northbound buses towards Salem, Erode, Dharmapuri, Hosur, Namakkal, Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Mettupalayam, and Tirupur, and eastbound buses towards Dharapuram and Karur, among others. There are 119 inter-city routes operated by the Coimbatore division with more than 500 buses.

Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand

Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand serves as the terminus for intra-city buses and operates buses to other major bus termini like the Singanallur Bus Terminus, Ukkadam Bus Terminus, and New Bus stand. Inter-city and intra-city buses that connect Coimbatore operate from various bus stands: the bus stand also operates town buses on 257 intra-city routes.

Thiruvalluvar Bus Stand

The Thiruvallavur Bus Stand is located near the Gandhipuram bus terminus and is serviced by TNSTC, SETC, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation.

Other Termini

Buses headed eastbound via Palladam to Trichy, Thanjavur, and Nagapattinam in the eastern parts of Tamil Nadu, and also go to locations in southern Tamil Nadu, such as Madurai, Sivagangai, Tirunelveli, Theni, Dindigul, Rameshwaram, Sivakasi, and Rajapalayam, depart from the Singanallur Bus Terminus. Buses headed southward and westward to Palakkad, Palani, Pollachi, Udumalpet, and Valparai originate from the Ukkadam Bus Terminus. Buses heading north to areas such as Ooty, Coonoor, and Gudalur depart from the Saibaba Colony Bus Terminus.

Omni bus service

Long-distance video coach buses, known as Omni buses, are operated by private firms. For the convenience of the travellers, a centralised bus stand for these buses was opened in June 2006 at Sathy Road, opposite to GP Theatre. The omni bus stand is 0.5 km from Gandhipuram Bus Stand and the State Express Transport Corporation Bus Stand. Facilities in the bus stand include restrooms,, and offices.

The terminus is connected to the Saibaba Colony Bus Terminus, which is about 3.5 kilometres away; the Ukkadam Bus Terminus, which is about 4.5 kilometres away; and the Singanallur Bus Terminus, which is about 10 kilometres away. The Coimbatore Junction railway station is about 3.0 kilometres away and the Coimbatore International Airport is about 9.2 kilometers away.
