GalliumOS

GalliumOS is a Linux distribution for Chrome OS devices, developed by the community-supported GalliumOS project. The distribution is made for Chrome hardware including Chromebook, Chromebox, Chromebit and Chromebase. GalliumOS beta1 was released on 10 November 2015.

Features

Gallium is based on Xubuntu and maintains compatibility with the Ubuntu repositories. Multiple sources indicate that Galliums' boot time is faster than Linux distributions made for Chrome OS. It is optimized to limit stalls and has integrated touchpad drivers.
Gallium is compatible with some Chrome devices. It is necessary to prepare the device in different ways based on the hardware chipset.

Prerequisites

Typically, a Chromebook on which GalliumOS is to be installed requires modification of the device itself, typically in a way which voids the warranty. The most common reason for this is to uninstall a screw which, when installed, prevents the installation of new firmware. The reason this must be done is that modern chromebooks lack the necessary firmware required to boot from an external device, making the installation of GalliumOS impossible. The firmware is typically installed through a custom script written by MrChrombox.
