Forego Stakes

The Forego Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Open to horses three years old and up, it is a Grade I event run at a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt. The race can be a prep race for either the Breeders' Cup Sprint at 6 furlongs, or the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. In 2015, the purse was increased to $700,000.
Inaugurated in 1980 at the Belmont Park racetrack in Elmont, New York, where it remained through 1983, the Forego Handicap was initially run a distance of eight furlongs. From 1982 to 1999 it was raced at seven furlongs, then for 2000 through 2002 at six and a half furlongs before reverting to the seven furlong distance in 2003.
This race is named for Forego, the American Horse of the Year for three straight years between 1974 and 1976.
The Forego is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series. The winner receives a "Win and You're In" berth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.
