Food and Shelter


Food and Shelter is a 2015 Spanish drama directed by Juan Miguel del Castillo. It premiered in Spain on 4 December 2015. It won a Goya Award for Best Actress. It is the first feature film from Castillo, an experienced editor and director of shorts.
The film reflects the stresses faced by individuals as the impact of the 2007–2008 global economic crisis continues to be felt in the Spanish economy
. The film was largely financed by crowdfunding.

Plot

Rocio, an unemployed single mother, has barely enough to eat as she does not receive unemployment benefits. Between feelings of shame, failure and the fear of losing custody of her 8-year old son Adrian, she tries to maintain the appearance of living a normal life with some help from a neighbour. The situation becomes worse when the landlord, himself overwhelmed by debts, sues her for the rent she owes.
