Ferdinand Franz Wallraf

Ferdinand Franz Wallraf was a German botanist, mathematician, theologian, collector and Roman Catholic priest. His collection formed the founding nucleus of the Wallraf–Richartz Museum.

Life

He was born in Cologne to a master tailor from the city. From 1760 he attended the Gymnasium Montanum and from 1765 the Artistenfakultät, graduating MA in 1767. From 1776 onwards his friend professor Johann Georg Menn funded him to study medicine, gaining his baccalaureat on 1 June 1778 and his masters on 3 August 1780.
In 1794 he was elected as Rector of the University of Cologne.
