EnterpriseDB

EnterpriseDB, a privately held company based in Massachusetts, provides software and services based on the open-source database PostgreSQL. EDB develops and integrates performance, security, and manageability enhancements into PostgreSQL to support enterprise-class workloads for its database, EDB Postgres Advanced Server. EDB has also developed database compatibility for Oracle to facilitate the migration of workloads from Oracle to EDB Postgres and to support the operation of many Oracle workloads on EDB Postgres.
EnterpriseDB sells subscriptions to its EDB Postgres Platform with the option of EDB Postgres Advanced Server or PostgreSQL as the database. The platform subscriptions include tool suites, upgrades, support, and maintenance.
Gartner positioned EnterpriseDB in the 2017 Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems, making it one of just 11 vendors to be included in the report and the fifth consecutive year the company was recognized. Gartner positioned EnterpriseDB in the Leaders Quadrant in its Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems in October 2014 and again in September 2015. EnterpriseDB was recognized in the Challengers Quadrant in the Magic Quadrant for Operational Database Management Systems in October 2016.

History

EDB was founded in 2004. The growing acceptance of open source software created a market opportunity and the company wanted to challenge the database incumbents with a standards based product that was compatible with other vendor solutions. EnterpriseDB sought to develop an open source-based, enterprise-class relational database to compete with established vendors at an open source price point.
The company chose PostgreSQL as its technology foundation because of PostgreSQL's record of over 20 years of large-scale commercial deployments, its thriving developer community, and its reputation as the most robust open-source database available.
EDB introduced its prototype database, EnterpriseDB 2005, in 2005. It was named Best Database Solution at LinuxWorld that year, beating solutions from Oracle, MySQL, and IBM. EDB renamed the database EnterpriseDB Advanced Server with its March 2006 release. The database was renamed Postgres Plus Advanced Server in March 2008. In April 2016, with the introduction of the EDB Postgres Platform, EDB's fully integrated next-generation data management platform, the database was renamed to EDB Postgres Advanced Server.

Products

EDB Postgres Platform

The EDB Postgres Platform is available in three subscriptions: EDB Postgres Enterprise, EDB Postgres Standard, and EDB Postgres Developer. The EDB Postgres Enterprise subscription includes the EDB Postgres Advanced Server database and database compatibility with Oracle. EDB Postgres Standard includes the PostgreSQL database.
All three subscriptions include comprehensive management, integration, migration tool suites, global support and upgrades, and are deployable across a wide range of on-premises and cloud configurations. The tool suites are:
The EDB Postgres Ark is a Database-as-a-Service for hybrid cloud deployments of Postgres to private and public clouds such as Red Hat OpenStack, Amazon Web Services, and other deployment platforms.

EDB Postgres Plus Cloud Database

EnterpriseDB offers two editions of a cloud database. These are the EDB Postgres Plus Cloud Database Advanced, which includes the EDB Postgres Advanced Server database, and EDB Postgres Plus Cloud Database Basic, which includes the PostgreSQL database. The Management Console in the cloud products provision databases in single instances, high availability clusters, or development sandboxes for Database-as-a-Service environments.

EDB Postgres Containers

EDB is a member of the Red Hat OpenShift Primed Program with a set of two certified Linux Container images published in the Red Hat Container Catalog. One container is preconfigured with the EDB Postgres Advanced Server 9.5 database, EDB Postgres Failover Manager, and pgPool for load balancing. The other container is preconfigured with EDB Postgres Backup and Recovery.

User Forum

EnterpriseDB launched a new user forum, Postgres Rocks, in June 2017. The user forum is designed to foster conversation and ongoing collaboration among Postgres users with resources, access to experts, discussion forums, and how to's on Postgres.

Postgres Vision

Postgres Vision is an annual conference started by EnterpriseDB in 2016 with Kathleen Kennedy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The first event was held in October 2016 in San Francisco and the second event was held in June 2017 in Boston. Postgres Vision is multi-day event that focuses on current and future enterprise usage of Postgres and open source data management solutions. The event draws database administrators, architects, data scientists, line of business executives, C-level executives, and developers to network, share best practices, and explore new and emerging use cases for Postgres and complementary open source data solutions.
