Elysian is located approximately 70 miles SSW of Minneapolis. Minnesota Highway 60 serves as a main route in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of ; is land and is water.

The racial makeup of the city was 96.6% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Asian, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population. There were 273 households, of which 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couplesliving together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.84. The median age in the city was 43.4 years. 23.6% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.9% were from 25 to 44; 28.4% were from 45 to 64; and 19.2% were 65 years of age or older. There were 204 households, out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.9% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.95. In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
