Edith Ramirez
Edith Ramirez is a former Chairwoman of the Federal Trade Commission, a post she assumed on March 4, 2013.
Her term as a Commissioner began on April 5, 2010 and expired on September 25, 2015, but she continued to serve awaiting the appointment of a successor until her resignation effective February 10, 2017. Following her tenure at the FTC, she joined the law firm of Hogan Lovells as a partner in their Washington, D.C. office.
Prior to joining the Commission, Ramirez was a partner in the Los Angeles office of Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, where she handled a broad range of complex business litigation, including successfully representing clients in intellectual property, antitrust, unfair competition, and Lanham Act matters. She has extensive appellate litigation experience.
From 1993-96, she was an associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP, in Los Angeles. She clerked for the Hon. Alfred T. Goodwin in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from 1992-93. Throughout her career, Ramirez has been active in a variety of professional and community activities. Most recently, she served as the Vice President on the Board of Commissioners for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, the nation's largest municipal utility.Education
A native of Southern California, she graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude, where she served as an editor of the Harvard Law Review, and holds a B.A. in History magna cum laude from Harvard University.
