Dietmar Rothermund


Dietmar Rothermund was a German historian best known for his research on the economy of India.

Education and Career

Dietmar Rothermund was born on 20 January 1933 in Kassel. He studied history and philosophy in Marburg and Munich, and received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1959. His PhD dissertation centered on the social history of America. Shortly thereafter he traveled to India on a scholarship from the German Research Foundation.
In 1963, Heidelberg University offered him an appointment as a research assistant and in 1968 he received tenure and was given the Chair of South Asian History.
Rothermund also served on the Advisory Board of the Oxford Research Encyclopaedia of Asian History.
Rothermund died on 9 March 2020.
