Decatur Memorial Hospital was the vision of Sue Hagaman, an active citizen who felt that because the existing hospital did not deliver babies, Decatur was in need of a second hospital to accommodate births.
She publicly advocated for the building of a community hospital and approached a prominent Decatur doctor, Dr. William Barnes, who was instrumental in the plan and completion of the hospital. For 15 years, they planned, organized community members, and raised funds to build the hospital. On January 1, 1916, Decatur and Macon County Hospital opened its doors to patients. The name was changed to Decatur Memorial Hospital in 1968.
