David Fergusson (theologian)


David Alexander Syme Fergusson is a Scottish theologian. He is Professor of Divinity at New College in the University of Edinburgh. He is a minister of the Church of Scotland.

Biography

Fergusson was Assistant Minister at St Nicholas Parish Church, Lanark, 1983-1984 and Associate Minister at St Mungo's Parish Church, Cumbernauld, 1984–1986.
In 1985, he was appointed a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. In 1990, he was appointed Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Aberdeen, before moving to Edinburgh in 2000. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and an associate director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues.
Fergusson delivered the Cunningham Lectures in Edinburgh in 1996, the Bampton Lectures in Oxford in 2001, the Gifford Lectures at the University of Glasgow in 2008 and the Warfield Lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary.
He was installed as a personal chaplain to the Queen in November 2015 and was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 Birthday Honours for services to education, the arts, and the Church of Scotland. From 2008–18, he served as Principal of New College. In July 2019 the Queen appointed him as Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland and Dean of the Order of the Thistle.
