Cyprus in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006


Cyprus participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 with "Why Angels Cry" performed by Annet Artani. The song placed 15th in the semi-final with 57 points and therefore did not qualify for the final.

Before Eurovision

A Song for Europe

A Song for Europe was be the national final format developed by CyBC in order to select Cyprus' entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006.

Format

A Song for Europe consisted of two semi-finals on 11 and 12 February 2006 and a final on 22 February 2006. The top five songs from each semi-final, as determined by public televoting, qualified to the final. The winner in the final was determined by regional televoting, which saw the televotes of five regions in Cyprus, alongside with the overall televoting result, being converted into points.
All shows took place at the CyBC TV Studios in Nicosia, hosted by Alex Michael and Christina Marouchou.

Competing entries

114 songs were submitted to CyBC. The twenty participating acts were announced on 4 January 2006. Shortly after the list was released, nine of the songs were disqualified from the competition due to breaking multiple rules of the competition. As a result of this, they were replaced by an additional nine entries from the received submissions.

Semi-final 1

The first semi-final took place on 11 February 2006 where ten acts competed. The top five entries as determined by public televoting proceeded to the final.

Semi-final 2

The second semi-final took place on 12 February 2006 where ten acts competed. The top five entries as determined by public televoting proceeded to the final.

Final

The final took place on 22 February 2006 February 2006. The winner, "Why Angels Cry" performed by Annet Artani, was determined by regional televoting.

At Eurovision

Because Cyprus placed 18th at the 2005 contest, Annet was forced to compete in the Eurovision semi-final. At the Eurovision semi-final, performed 9th, following Ireland and preceding the Monaco she came 15th in the semi-final with 57 points, and failed to reach the final. Therefore, Cyprus had to compete in the semi-final again in ESC 2007.
