History

Congregation Neveh Shalom was formed from the mergers of three older synagogues in south Portland. The oldest, Ahavai Shalom, was founded in 1869. In 1902, Talmud Torah merged with Neveh Zedek, to form Neveh Zedek Talmud Torah. It in turn merged with Ahavai Shalom in 1961, to form Neveh Shalom. It is the second oldest Jewish congregation in the Pacific Northwest and the oldest Conservative congregation on the West Coast. The current building was completed in 1965. Senator Robert F. Kennedy spoke there during his 1968 campaign for President.
