Claire City, South Dakota


Claire City is a town in Roberts County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 76 at the 2010 census.

History

Claire City was founded in 1913 and named by A. E. Feeney, one of the four donors of the town site, for his wife, Claire. Mrs. Feeney was still living on land adjoining the town in 1941. The post office in Claire City was established November 21, 1913. The first postmaster was Ben Sandsmark; the post office moved into the Herb Bladow building in 1968.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 76 people, 33 households, and 25 families residing in the town. The population density was. There were 39 housing units at an average density of. The racial makeup of the town was 78.9% White, 1.3% African American, 14.5% Native American, 3.9% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.9% of the population.
There were 33 households, of which 27.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.6% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 24.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.64.
The median age in the town was 44.5 years. 19.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 11.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18.5% were from 25 to 44; 35.5% were from 45 to 64; and 14.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 53.9% male and 46.1% female.

As of the census of 2000, there were 85 people, 37 households, and 28 families residing in the town. The population density was 465.6 people per square mile. There were 42 housing units at an average density of 230.0 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 88.24% White and 11.76% Native American.
