Civic Center (Shenzhen)


Civic Center or Citizens' Center is an 84.7 meters-tall, 200,000 square meter government building Shenzhen, China. It is located within the Futian Central Business District and was constructed at a cost of CNY 2.172 billion. It comprises a museum, a historical archive, a conferences room with a capacity of 2500 and government offices, and other establishments.
The building's roof spans 486 meters and has a width of 154 meters. The roof is meant to represent the wings of a mythical bird named Dapeng, which is also the name of the Dapeng Peninsula and a district in Shenzhen.
The building's architect is Lee / Timchula Architects. John Ming Yee Lee was the lead partner in the Edward Larrabee Barnes Architects and Associates firm based in New York City. Lee / Timchula won an international urban design competition for the 2 square kilometer city center which includes the Citizen Center, parks, roads and adjacent office towers. The building was built by the Shenzhen QiXin Construction Group Co., Ltd. Construction started in late 1998 and was completed in May 2004.
