History

Churchill Retirement Living was founded by brothers Spencer and Clinton McCarthy, originally as Emlor Homes in 1994. Their base was an office in Clinton's garage in the New Forest. In 2000, the pair decided to move into the retirement housing sector, focusing exclusively on building retirement properties for the over 60s. In 2003, the company re-branded as Churchill Retirement Living.
Spencer and Clinton's father, John McCarthy MBE, co-founded the retirement property builder McCarthy & Stone. In 2004 he sold his stake in the company and in the same year he was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of Churchill Retirement Living.
In 2015, Dame Esther Rantzen became a Brand Ambassador for Churchill Retirement Living.
In late 2016, Churchill Retirement Living became the first retirement developer to be awarded the WhatHouse? Housebuilder of the Year Award.

Operations

The company manages its retirement apartments through Millstream Management Services, which provides services and support to leaseholders and is responsible for routine maintenance work. Millstream Management Services manages approximately 5,700 retirement leasehold properties across the UK.
