Christie Neptune


Christie Neptune is a West Indian-American visual artist. She was a 2018 recipient of an Artist Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts. She is best known for her exhibition "She Fell From Normalcy," which depicts an afro-surrealist, sci-fi fantasy world.

Early life and education

Neptune was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her family is West Indian. She attended Fordham University for her bachelor of fine arts degree and graduated in 2009.

Career

Neptune gained notice for her afro-surrealist video exhibition called "She Fell From Normalcy" in 2016. She stated that the goal of the exhibit was to evoke the feelings of discrimination that people of color experience. The work also speaks to her experiences with depression and the stigma of mental health in the African American community. "She Fell From Normalcy" is the third installment of a three part series that begin in 2012 with a piece called Eye of the Storm, which critiqued the White male gaze.
In 2017, she exhibited "Ms._________" which used photo and video to display portraiture of Black women.
In 2018, Neptune received an Artist Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in the Interdisciplinary Work category.
