Controversy

In November 2007, Dartez came under fire from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for calling one of her volunteers, Hazel Boykin, "Buckwheat." Dartez also faced a raft of bad publicity when she accidentally ran over a pedestrian and when her the company of her husband, Lenny J. Dartez, was accused of violations of immigration law. The local chapter of the NAACP threw its support behind her Republican opponent, Joe Harrison of Napoleonville in Assumption Parish, in the general election held on November 17, 2007. Dartez polled 3,276 votes to Harrison's 4,338. Harrison held the seat until January 11, 2016, when he was succeeded by his fellow Republican Beryl Adams Amedee, who unseated him in the runoff election held on November 21, 2015.
