Callejones


Callejones is a barrio in the municipality of Lares, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,575. Machos Cave and Pajita Cave are located in Callejones.

History

The United States took control of Puerto Rico from Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish-American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1899, the US conducted its first census of Puerto Rico finding that the population of Callejones barrio was 2,152.

Archeological site

An archeological site consisting of a batey is located in Callejones. It is of the Early Ostionoid and Late Ostionoid prehistoric eras and has been researched by Jose Oliver, a researcher from Yale University, and Samuel Kirkland Lothrop.
