Bruce Bucknell


Bruce Bucknell is a British diplomat who was the Deputy High Commissioner of Kolkata. He previously served as Ambassador to Belarus.

Early life

Bucknell studied at Durham University, where he gained a 2:1 in Modern History.

Career

FCO

Bucknell's first overseas posting upon joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office was to Amman, where he served from 1988 to 1991. He later served in Milan from 1995 to 1999, and was the First Secretary at the Embassy in Madrid from 2003 to 2007. From 2007 to 2009 he was Deputy Head of the Sudan Unit at the Department for International Development and subsequently became Deputy Head of Security in Estates at the Security Directorate of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office until 2011.

Ambassador

Bucknell was appointed Ambassador to Belarus in 2012, and left this post in 2016. In an interview given to the website Euro Belarus, Bucknell said he was optimistic about gradual reengagement of Belarus by the nations of the European Union and described Belarus' accession to the European Higher Education Area the previous year a great success. He then became Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata.

Personal life

Bucknell is married to Henrietta Dorrington-Ward and has two sons.
