Bhawal Estate


Bhawal Estate was one of the largest zamindari estate in Bengal in modern-day Bangladesh. It had 2,274 villages in an area of 1,500 kilometers and a population of 55,000.

History

In the late seventeenth century Daulat Ghazi and his son Fazl Ghazi was the zamindar of the Ghazi estate of Bhawal.Ghazi Family was originally from Yemen and Pathanisthan.They were very religious and pathani warriors. A District Gazipur District was named after their legacy. Bala Ram was Diwan of Ghazis.After the defeat of Baro Bhuiyans, Ghazi Family disappeared.It is said that Fazl Ghazi and his Son Sona Ghazi went to Bakerganj.In 1615,With Bala Ram's assistance,Raja Amarendra Kumar Chowdhury was installed as the zamindar of Bhawal by Murshid Quli Khan. Since then through acquisitions the zamindari expanded to great extent. The family turned into the proprietor of the whole Bhawal pargana after purchasing the zamindari of J. Wise, an indigo grower for Rs 4,46,000..It was the largest Zamindari in Bengal.In 1877, Kaliprosanna Ghosh became the Dewan of Bhawal Estate for Zamindar Raja Rajendra Kumar Chowdhury.. The last Raja of Bhawal was Raja Mahendra Kumar Chowdhury.
