Avi Schafer


Avi Koki Schafer is a Japanese professional basketball player for the Shiga Lakestars of the B.League. He played college basketball for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He also holds US citizenship.

Early life and career

Schafer was born in Suita, Osaka, Japan, to Douglas and Sayuki Schafer. He is Jewish. In high school he played for Brewster Academy in his senior year in 2016-17, as the team went 33-0 and won the national prep school championship and the NEPSAC class AAA title.
He averaged 4.9 points and 4.5 rebounds for Japan in the 2016 FIBA Asia U18 Championship. Schafer played for Japan in the 2017 FIBA U19 World Cup, averaging 5.0 points and 4.9 rebounds while hitting 57.1 percent of his shots from the floor. He also represented Japan at the 2018 Asian Games. Schafer was also a member of the Japanese team at the 2019 William Jones Cup. Schafer was named in Japanese squad for the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
