History

The Auditor of Public Accounts Act of 1862 established the position "to receive, audit and adjust all accounts or claims against the State arising out of the military service or in the civil administration of the government." The North Carolina Constitution of 1868 reestablished the position as the Auditor of North Carolina, by which it became a statewide elected office. Prior to 1862, the General Assembly appointed state comptrollers and boards of auditors in various parts of the state.
