Australia
In all Australian police forces, assistant commissioner is the rank below deputy commissioner but senior to the rank of commander, senior to the rank of superintendent and senior to the rank of chief superintendent. In all services, the insignia consists of crossed and wreathed tipstaves; as a rank, it is roughly equivalent to that of a brigadier or major-general in the army.

Pakistan
In Pakistan, an assistant commissioner is a rank of the Revenue Administration, which is of two sub-types: Land Revenue, come from two services Provincial Management Service and Pakistan Administrative Service, and Income tax or Inland Revenue. The assistant commissioner of Land Revenue is an official appointed/posted at the sub-district level responsible for managing land records, revenue receipts related to land transfer, water cess, and crop cess etc. He is also given magisterial powers in the capacity of sub-divisional magistrate to settle disputes. The CSS and PMS is an elite permanent bureaucratic authority and the civil service that is responsible for running the civilian bureaucratic operations and government secretariats and directorates of the Cabinet Secretariat. The civil service defined itself as "key wheels on which the entire engine of the state has to move." Derived from the colonial legacy of the former British Empire- Assistant commissioner selection is made after passing the CSS or PMS exam and including the name in PAS or PMS group respectively.

In Bangladesh, Assistant Commissioner is the entry level post of field Administration of the Administrative Service while the entry post of central Administration is Assistant Secretary. This rank is also used in other services like tax, customs and police, only in metropolitan areas such as Assistant Commissioner of Police. Assistant Commissioners play vital role in field administration. At first, they are posted at office of the Deputy Commissioner in District. They take part to deliver services to the people. As an Executive Magistrate, they also conduct mobile courts under the Mobile Court Act, 2009.
Ireland
In the Garda Síochána, the Republic of Ireland's national police force, the rank of assistant commissioner is between chief superintendent and deputy commissioner.
New Zealand
In the New Zealand Police, the rank of assistant commissioner is junior to the rank of deputy commissioner and is senior to the rank of superintendent. assistant commissioner is the top rank that can be achieved by a sworn member other than by statutory appointment. There are currently five assistant commissioners with separate areas of responsibility.
