Art Gensler


Millard Arthur Gensler Jr. is an American architect who founded the architecture firm Gensler.

Early life

In 1935, Gensler was born as Millard Arthur Gensler in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. Gensler's father was Millard Arthur Gensler, Sr., aka "Slats". Gensler's father was an architectural sales rep who sold ceiling tiles.

Education

Gensler earned his B.Arch. degree from Cornell University in 1958.

Career

In 1965, Gensler founded M. Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates Inc., an architecture firm, now known as Gensler. In 2010, Gensler stepped down as the firm's chairman. Though, as of March 2017, he still served as an adviser for the firm.
Gensler published his first book, Art's Principles, in 2015.

Personal life

In 1957, Gensler married Drue Cortell. Gensler and his wife have four sons, David, Douglas, Robert and Kenneth. Gensler's son David Gensler was a co-CEO at Gensler.
Gensler's son Douglas C. Gensler, an architect, is a co-managing director for Gensler's office in Boston. Gensler's son Robert W. Gensler is a golf professional in San Diego, California. Gensler's son Kenneth Gensler is an airline pilot.

Awards

The Design Futures Council awarded Gensler its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
