Arlesheim District


Arlesheim District is one of the five districts of the largely German-speaking canton of Basel-Country, Switzerland. Its capital is the town of Arlesheim. It has a population of .

Geography

Arlesheim district has an area,, of. Of this area, or 28.9% is used for agricultural purposes, while or 28.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, or 40.7% is settled, or 1.2% is either rivers or lakes and or 0.2% is unproductive land.
Of the built up area, industrial buildings made up 4.6% of the total area while housing and buildings made up 21.3% and transportation infrastructure made up 9.3%. Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.3% of the area while parks, green belts and sports fields made up 4.1%. Out of the forested land, 27.5% of the total land area is heavily forested and 1.4% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees. Of the agricultural land, 17.8% is used for growing crops and 7.4% is pastures, while 3.8% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.

Most of the population speaks German, with Italian language being second most common and French being third. There are 132 people who speak Romansh.

Politics

In the 2007 federal election the most popular party was the SP which received 27.33% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP, the FDP and the CVP. In the federal election, a total of 50,214 votes were cast, and the voter turnout was 49.3%.

Religion

From the, 49,324 or 34.8% were Roman Catholic, while 50,232 or 35.5% belonged to the Swiss Reformed Church. Of the rest of the population, there were 1,560 members of an Orthodox church, there were 646 individuals who belonged to the Christian Catholic Church, and there were 4,056 individuals who belonged to another Christian church. There were 266 individuals who were Jewish, and 4,524 who were Islamic. There were 479 individuals who were Buddhist, 867 individuals who were Hindu and 157 individuals who belonged to another church. 24,848 belonged to no church, are agnostic or atheist, and 4,640 individuals did not answer the question.

Education
