Archie Harris (athlete)


Archie Harris was an American discus thrower.
As Indiana University student he won the 1940 NCAA Track and Field Championships, defending his title 1941 with the world record of 53.26 m. In 1941 he also became US champion.
In World War II he was a bomber pilot, but as an African American he couldn't get a job as a commercial pilot after the war. Finally he became physical education teacher at the Harlem, New York YMCA.
In 2001 he was introduced into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame.
