Andreas Anagnostakis


Dr Andreas Anagnostakis was a Greek physician.
He was born on the island of Antikythera in 1826 to a family that originated in Anopolis, Sfakia, Crete.
He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens on June 26, 1849, and did his ophthalmological training in Paris and Berlin. He is credited for the development of the hand-held ophthalmoscope, thus significantly advancing the design and use of the original ophthalmoscope invented by Hermann von Helmholtz. Besides his fame as a great doctor and scientist, Anagnostakis was an accomplished author and poet. He also served as Dean of the Medical School of the University of Athens and as President of the University.
Anagnostakis died in Athens.
