Aigio railway station

Aigio railway station is a railway station in Aigio in northern Peloponnese, Greece. Since June 2020, it is served by trains to Kiato railway station. The station is located in the suburbs of the town, 2 km from the town's centre.

History

The station was built in 2015 and it serves as the main railway station for trains connecting Aigio with Athens and Patras. On 17 April 2019 the Greek Minister of Infrastructure, Christos Spirtzis, launched a test run on the new double-track Kiato-Aigio rail section, part of the new Corinth – Patras line. After 8 years of suspension, railway traffic was expected to be resumed when all the train tests would be completed. According to ERGOSE officials and the minister Spirtzis, this was expected to happen before September 2019. There were further delays, and in January 2020 it was announced that the operation of the line Kiato - Aigio would start in April 2020. However due to the COVID-19 pandemic the inauguration ceremony was postponed for June 2020.
Finally on June 22, 2020 the new services in the section Kiato - Aigio - Kiato were initiated.

Currently there are six pairs of routes that operate from Aigio to Athens Railway Station or the Athens International Airport and from Athens or the Airport to Aigio, respectively. The trains currently in use for those routes, are the diesel GTW 2/6 low floor articulated DMUs, constructed by Stadler Rail in 2003.
The electrification of the line Kiato - Aigio is scheduled to start soon and to be finished in 2 years. Until then TrainOSE will use diesel trains and passengers have to transfer to electric trains at Kiato Railway Station.

Facilities

The station is equipped with waiting rooms, shelters, toilets and a cafe. There is also a staffed ticket office. Outside of the station there is a big parking lot. Currently there are no local bus services connecting the station with the centre of Aigio. Road access to the station is provided by two quite narrow paved roads which still need improvement.
